Machinist

Purpose:
To operate lathes, drill presses, and associated equipment within the machine shop.
Responsibilities:
- Operate and programs Manual Data Input (MDI) machines.
- Conducts test runs and check tooling if production parts are not correct.
- Checks parts made by others and if not to specification, verifies layout, setup, and correct operation of machine tools.
- Performs lay out planning, fabrication, alteration, repair, and maintenance of bonding jigs, drill jigs, strain relief tools, type II form blocks, gauges, inspection fixtures, weld fixtures, trim and router fixtures, saw fixtures, cams for spar mills, dies, machine tools, dollies, racks, work stands and raised metal platforms.
- Produces parts from drawings where no designs are available.
- Uses machine and hand tools, precision measuring instruments, mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, presses sanders, saws, etc. to perform required work.
Qualifications:
- Requires a minimum of five years experience in AFSC 53 1 XO/458X2/2A7X3 of which one year must be at the seven level.
- Qualification as a Machinist is mandatory. In addition, experience in performing or supervising functions such as activities involving either the designing of special precision tools, gauges, or dies; or the production of fabricated metal parts held to close tolerances by machines is mandatory.
- Must have a working knowledge of shop mathematics, machine speeds and feeds, cutting qualities of materials, production methods, and shop practices.
- Must be able to work from drawings, sketches, charts, handbook formulas, and verbal instructions
