Flight Safety Advisor

Duties:
CONDUCTS AND ASSISTS IN THE MANAGEMENT OF SAFETY PROGRAMS:
- Assists in the development of policies and procedures for the implementation and operation of safety activities.
- Performs evaluations of safety activities to analyze effectiveness of actions.
- Assists in coordinating with parallel agencies and staff activities on safety related functions.
- Operates safety education equipment.
- Assists in the preparation and conduct of briefings, meetings, and associated functions on safety for all echelons of command.
- Assists in determining requirements for safety education of groups or individuals by analysis of operations, review of mishap reports, and other related activities.
- Reviews explosives quantity-distance waivers and deviations.
PERFORMS INSPECTIONS AND SURVEYS OF AREAS AND OPERATIONS TO IDENTIFY ACCIDENT POTENTIALS:
- Visits areas and activities on a periodic schedule, on request by commanders or supervisors, or when accident statistical analysis indicates need.
- Observes methods of operation and identifies hazardous conditions or procedures.
- Recognizes unsafe environmental conditions and informs appropriate personnel.
- Performs periodic and special inspections of flight lines, industrial shops, missile launch complexes and support functions, weapons storage areas, munitions services facilities and munitions handling
- operations, and work and recreation areas.
- Reports findings, assigns risk assessment codes, and recommends corrective actions.
REVIEWS ENGINEERING PLANS AND DRAWINGS:
- Studies sketches and drawings to be sure there are provisions for proper lighting, machinery guards, positioning of ground support equipment, handrails, exits, traffic movement, placement of safety
- signs, signals, markings, and compliance with safety standards.
- Review plans for positioning of materials to be processed to avoid unnecessary lifting, moving, or handling.
- Recommends revisions in drawings or rearrangement of equipment.
- Reviews base master plans, explosives-loaded aircraft parking plans, and individual site plans affecting explosives safety.
PERFORMS ACCIDENT INVESTIGATIONS, PREPARES REPORTS, AND MAINTAINS RECORDS:
- Performs or assists commanders and supervisors in performing accident investigations.
- Gathers factual accident data, interviews involved personnel and witnesses, reconstructs accident sequence and analyzes all data to assist in determining accident causes.
- Provides guidance on corrective actions required to prevent recurring accidents.
