Digital Flight Simulator Technician
Summary:
Digital flight simulator technicians, AFSC 34270, are required for the RSAF Simulators at KAAB, KFDAB and KKAB. The technicians are to be skilled and knowledgeable in the operation and maintenance on area-20 software of simulator computer equipment, and must have sufficient background knowledge in operation, maintenance and programming of the computer and its peripheral equipment to accomplish tasks assigned by the RSAF functional manager. Specifically, they must be able to accomplish on-site maintenance on all portions of the simulator including, but not limited to, the digital computer and peripheral equipment, tape memory system, card readers, main and buffer assemblies, teletypes, analog to digital, digital to analog and syncro to digital converters. They must be able to accomplish necessary analysis, trouble shooting, disassembly, repair, replacement of parts, reassembly and testing to correct malfunctions and verify adequate and proper operation of any component, system, or subsystem of the simulator for training and scheduled and unscheduled maintenance in accordance with applicable technical data. In addition, they will be capable of accomplishing maintenance on cockpit procedure trainers/egress procedure trainers and two-dimensional training aids within their specialty.
Specialty Summary:
Inspect, maintain, troubleshoots, repair, operates, installs and modifies digital flight simulators, motion systems, computer software systems, associated electronic equipment and supervises digital flight simulator activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Inspects and maintains digital flight simulator equipment and other trainers.
- Performs periodic inspections on simulators.
- Analyzes discrepancies reported by instructors and visually inspects items such as mechanical, hydraulics, pneumatic, and electronic components, digital computers and associated peripheral equipment.
- Accomplishes Preventive Maintenance functions, including replacement of defective electronic and mechanical components.
- Cleans and lubricates mechanical assemblies.
- Checks installed and repaired components to ensure compliance with technical publications.
- Prepares and maintains operations, inspections and maintenance documents and related simulator reports and records.
- Reviews maintenance management publications to obtain useful information applicable to digital flight simulator equipment.
- Diagnoses malfunctions and recommends corrective action by initiating product improvement reports on modification proposals.
- Devises new maintenance and operation procedures and recommends revisions to policies for greater program effectiveness.
- Troubleshoots and repairs digital flight simulator equipment and other trainer malfunctions. Analyzes discrepancies reported by flight instructors and students.
- Troubleshoots causes of digital flight simulator equipment malfunctions by using diagnostic program and computer consoles.
- Isolates defective system components, such as integrated circuits, operational amps, transistors, diodes, resistors, input and output components and power supplies.
- Analyzes circuits using command special purpose test equipment in conjunction with appropriate technical data and computer program listings, symbol tables, wire run lists, logic block and schematic diagrams.
- Resolves digital flight simulator and associated equipment malfunctions by repairing or replacing defective printed circuit boards or components.
- Aligns and adjusts mechanical assemblies by calibrating electronic circuits and replacing malfunctioning equipment.
- Flight tests digital flight simulators to determine if discrepancies have been cleared.
- Installs, adjusts and modifies digital flight simulator and other training equipment.
- Recommends and loads computer program changes and hardware modifications on the digital simulator equipment and computers.
- Modifies and maintains digital computers and peripheral equipment such as teletypewriters, line printers, card and paper tape punches and readers and magnetic tape and disc units.
- Installs and disassembles digital flight simulators and associated equipment.
- Documents modifications and prepares appropriate unsatisfactory reports on components and technical data not meeting prescribed standards.
- Evaluates justification and practicability of proposed modifications.
- Operates digital flight simulators and simulator equipment.
- Assists instructor and aircrew during scheduled training missions.
- Presents gross weight, altitudes, temperatures, navigation stations and instrument landing approach systems.
- Supervises digital flight simulator personnel.
- Plans and schedules work assignments. Monitors availability of test equipment, technical data, tools and spare parts.
- Assigns work to subordinates on the various maintenance and operational tasks of digital flight simulator equipment.
- Establishes work methods, production controls and quality control procedures.
- Determines if subordinates have complied with technical publications, performance standards and security fire prevention and ground safety directives.
- Instructs and advises user on limitations and capabilities of digital flight simulator equipment.
- Determines if personnel are complying with current RSAF maintenance management directives.
- Plans and conducts on-the-job training program.
- Must have capability to fix technical problems and install modifications in the system.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic theory that applies to digital flight simulators, radio navigation, electrical power sources, hydraulics, aerodynamics, pneumatics and instrumentation theory of digital flight simulators and associated equipment, principles of digital computers and computer programming, use of peripheral equipment (magnetic tape and drum units, paper tape readers and punches, teletypewriters, card readers, line printers and so forth), interpretation of logic block, schematic diagrams, wire run listings, computer program listings, computer diagnostics, symbol tapes, and mechanical blueprints, and knowledge of the RSAF maintenance management system is mandatory.
- Training. Completion of advanced digital flight simulator course is desirable.
- Completion of a base level supervisor's course is desirable.
Experience:
- Requires a minimum of five (5) years experience in AFSC 34270 of which two (2) years must be at the seven (7) level, with two (2) years experience on F-15 flight simulator and one (1) year experience on F-15S/E Flight Simulator is preferred.
- Qualification as a digital flight simulator specialist is mandatory. In addition, experience in performing or supervising functions such as inspection, operation, troubleshooting, modification, maintenance, computer programming, or repair of digital flight simulators and associated equipment is mandatory.
