Summary:

Performs a wide variety of planning and support functions pertaining to IBM data communications system software or RSAF developed data communications system software. Provides technical inputs to management planning/decision making process.

Duties:

• Performs the following under the direction of RSAF Senior Specialist in Data Communications.
• Responsible for all communications network and software. This includes VTAM. NCP, DSPRINT, NETSOL and any other host based communication software.
• Recommends local modifications to data communications software, when required Designs, codes. Tests and implements approved local modifications.
• Coordinates installation and updates approved network software upgrades with Computer Operations Technical Support personnel.
• Provides day-to-day support of systems software through the following activities.
• Assist in the design of single and multiple domain communications networks for use at the RSAF.
• Specification of control statements necessary to define the communication network used by the RSAF.
• Tailoring vendor supplied systems software to effectively operate within the RSAF environment.
• Planning, scheduling, coordinating, designing, coding, testing and implementing local fixes for unresolved vendor problems.
• Planning, scheduling, coordinating and applying vendor supplies fixes to systems and communications software.
• Investigate problems reported in the daily operation of the computer system. Performs detailed problems.
• Provides input to management when software decisions must be made affecting the operation of the computer and communication system.
• Coordinates and prepares documentation of systems software for use by programming/operations personnel.
• Conducts formal/informal training courses in technical areas which lie within the expertise of systems programming.

Qualifications:

• Requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, data processing, or a related scientific/engineering discipline.
• Requires a minimum of three (3) years experience in IBM Data Communications Systems Programming all within an MVS. VTAM and NCP environmental.
• Must have experience in the installation and maintenance of VTAM and NCP. Installation and maintenance experience with other IBM software products is preferred but not required.
• Must be proficient in the use of Assembler H. SMP/E, TSO and ISPE/PDF Dialogue Management, CLIST and REXX.
• Must have knowledge about working of the IBM Support Center and all aspects of IBM maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of IBM utilities and debugging tools.
